Promoflak or personification?..

Character design is a wide-ranging set of skills and their applications. The starting point is likely to be the same in all instances - a good long chat followed by furious scribbling to provide concept character designs.

But then there are your aims and objectives to consider...

• Will the character(s) exist solely in printed promotions?
• Will they become a brand in their own right?
• Will they cross over into radio and TV? You'll need a voice!
• Will they be 2D (cartoon) or 3D (solid models)?
• Where do they live? Do they belong to a community?
  
• Will they become merchandise themselves?

All this and more will require consideration and planning. Its not a long way from designing the basic poses to determining how the characters move and sound, but the benefits can be enormous. Drawn characters can evolve into solid models which move, speak, sing and dance! They can be stars of print, web, CD, DVD, Radio and Television - worldwide.

This all opens up possibilities...
